The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive flexibility and distress tolerance by the mediating role of negative problem orientation in orphans and abandoned adolescent. Methods: This study was a correlational research that carried out using structural equation analysis. The population of the present study included all orphans and abandoned adolescent were covered by the welfare office in Kerman city. 135 adolescents were selected by random cluster sampling. Data gathered by cognitive flexibility scale (CFI), Distress tolerance scale (DTS) and negative problem orientation scale (NPOQ) and analyzed by Pearson correlation and structural equation modeling. Results: The results show that cognitive flexibility directly affects the distress tolerance of orphans and abandoned adolescents also, cognitive flexibility by affecting on the negative problem orientation, indirectly affect distress tolerance (p<0/01). Nevertheless, the indirect effect of the negative direction was greater than the direct effect. Finally, fitness indices showed that the proposed model of the study have good fitness was confirmed by removing one of the subscales of cognitive flexibility resilience. Conclusions: Regarding the important role of cognitive and emotional problems in psychological pathology, adaptability of orphans and abandoned adolescent to stressful situations can be improved by the teaching of cognitive flexibility strategies by emphasizing on positive problem orientation.
