Abstract: (36 Views)
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of social work intervention using the Rahyab problem-solving approach in reducing suicidal thoughts among adolescents and the mediating role of hope and self-esteem.
Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-test and control group. A total of thirty-one adolescents with suicidal thoughts from the health center of Zarand County in Kerman Province were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. To assess the data, the Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale for suicidal thoughts, Schneider's Hope Scale for hope, and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale for self-esteem were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS 26 with multivariate analysis of covariance.
Results: The results indicated that the social work intervention was effective in reducing suicidal thoughts among adolescents. The mean score of suicidal thoughts in the intervention group decreased from twenty-two and sixty-six hundredths in the pre-test to six in the post-test. Additionally, the mean scores for hope increased from twenty and six tenths to forty-one and eight tenths, and self-esteem improved from negative five hundredths to sixty-six hundredths.
Conclusions: The social work intervention using the problem-solving approach can be considered as an effective strategy for reducing suicidal thoughts among adolescents through the enhancement of hope and self-esteem. This model is designed to emphasize problem-solving skills, individual empowerment, and the increase of hope and self-esteem. Not only can it help reduce suicidal thoughts in adolescents, but it can also serve as a framework for developing suicide prevention programs in other communities. Therefore, it is recommended that professionals in social work and psychology continue to develop and evaluate similar interventions to improve adolescents' mental health and prevent suicides. To generalize the results of this study to different populations, further experimental studies are essential. These studies could include comparisons across various age, gender, and cultural groups to examine the effects of the intervention more comprehensively.
