Introduction: Suicide is one of the most complex and critical social issues, and its reduction and prevention constitute major goals of governmental policies and programs across societies. The present study aims to provide a sociological analysis of suicide attempts in Lorestan Province, Iran, during the period from 2017 to 2021, based on available statistical data.
Methods: This study employed a documentary research design based on secondary data analysis. Data related to suicide attempts were obtained from records of the Legal Medicine Organization and Lorestan University of Medical Sciences. The unit of analysis was the individual. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: The findings indicated that the highest rate of suicide attempts occurred in 2020, twenty-six and four-tenths percent, followed by 2019, twenty-four and twenty-four hundredths percent, 2021, twenty-one and six-tenths percent, and 2017, nineteen and six-tenths percent, while the lowest rate was observed in 2018, ten and seven-tenths percent. In terms of geographical distribution, Khorramabad County had the highest proportion of suicide attempts, thirty-four and four-tenths percent, whereas Sepiddasht County reported the lowest rate, one-tenth percent. The highest incidence of suicide attempts was observed among individuals aged fifteen to twenty-four years, while the lowest incidence occurred in the fifty-five to sixty-four age group. Additionally, fifty-five and two-tenths percent of suicide attempts were committed by females and forty-four and eight-tenths percent by males.
Conclusion: The findings suggest that factors such as the expansion of poverty and unemployment, patriarchal normative pressures, domestic violence, forced marriage, transformations in cultural values and beliefs, increasing intergenerational tensions, family conflicts and dysfunctions, and the lack of social support are closely associated with suicide in Lorestan Province.
