Introduction: The aim of the research is to predict the organizational citizenship behaviors and deviant behaviors through impression management components.
Methodology: Correlation method was used as the research method for this study. The employees of a pharmaceutical company in Isfahan were the statistical population and 150 of them were selected by using convenience sampling. Research instruments consisted of impression management questionnaire (Bolino & Turnley, 1999), organizational citizenship behaviors questionnaire (Lee & Allen, 2002) and deviant behaviors questionnaire (Bennett & Robinson, 2000). Data were analyzed by Pearson’s correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis.
Results: The results of multiple regression analysis (enter method) revealed that among the components of impression management, self-promotion was the only one which has the predictive power to predict the organizational citizenship behaviors toward individuals, and self-promotion along with intimidation have the predictive power to predict the organizational citizenship behaviors toward the organization. It also revealed that intimidation has the predictive power to predict the deviant behaviors toward individuals, and intimidation along with supplication have predictive power to predict the deviant behaviors toward the organization.
Conclusions: According to the result of the study, impression management and its components are important factors in predicting citizenship and deviant behaviors. Particularly they’re much important in predicting citizenship behaviors, self-promotion, and intimidation and in predicting deviant behaviors, intimidation, and supplication. So the effects of the components of impression management on the citizenship and deviant behaviors in organizations need to be addressed.
