Introduction: Active video games are popular among children and teenagers. Therefore, this research aimed to compare the effects of traditional and active video games on the sustained and selective attention of athletes with ADHD.
Methods: The sample for the present study consisted of sixty athletes diagnosed with ADHD, aged twelve to sixteen years, from Lorestan province in the year 2023. Participants were selected using an available sampling method and were randomly divided into two experimental groups and one control group, with each group comprising twenty subjects. Following the pre-test, the traditional games group engaged in twenty common traditional games, while the active video games group played Beat Saber for ten sessions, with each session lasting twenty minutes. No intervention was implemented for the control group.
Upon completion of the intervention sessions, a post-test was conducted, followed by a follow-up test two weeks later. Both assessments utilized the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) and the computerized Stroop test. For data analysis, mixed-design ANOVA, one-way variance analysis, and the Bonferroni post hoc test were employed, with analyses performed using SPSS23 software.
Results: The results indicated that both experimental groups showed significant improvements in sustained and selective attention from the pre-test to the post-test (P=0.0001). A comparison of the groups in the post-test and follow-up test showed no significant differences between them (P=0.536). However, there was a significant difference in the average scores of both experimental groups compared to the control group (P=0.0001).
Conclusions: Active and traditional video games can effectively enhance athletes' sustained and selective attention.
