The Relationship Between Caregiving Burden and Family Function of Children with Cancer

Introduction: Child cancer has several effects on all family members. Definitely caring for children facing chronic diseases such as cancer can impose a large burden on the family and its effects on family function is an important issue to investigate.
Methods: the Current study is a cross-sectional survey which investigates the relationship between caregiving burden and family function in children with cancer. Among all parents with a child with cancer who were referred to Mahak hospital, 60 patients were selected based on purposive sampling method. Data were collected by demographic checklists, the Family Burden Interview Scale and Family Assessment Scale.
Results: The results of this study showed that there is a meaningful relationship between caregiving burden and family function in children with cancer. It revealed that there is a meaningful relationship between caregiving burden and problem-solving subscale, and also between caregiving burden and relationship subscale. There is no meaningful relationship between caregiving burden and other subscales of family function. Stepwise method of Regression analysis revealed that problem solving and relationship, together predict 30.5 percentage of caregiving burden.
Conclusions: The findings emphasized the impact of childhood cancer on families. Parents of children with cancer are needed to more supports and special planning in order to reduce caregiving burden and improve family function.
