Introduction:  The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) on coping styles in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group. Twenty patients diagnosed with OCD were selected through convenience sampling from among patients referred to the psychiatric ward of Seyyed Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Dorud. The diagnosis was based on the diagnostic criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The inclusion criteria were being between sixteen and sixty years of age, having completed at least the ninth grade of education, and having received no psychological or pharmacological treatment during the preceding six months. Participants were also required to have no severe psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, brain injuries, substance abuse, or intellectual disability. The participants were assigned to an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group received eight sessions of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, whereas the control group received no treatment. Participants in both groups completed the Coping Styles Questionnaire before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).

Results: The results indicated that, after controlling for pretest scores, the difference between the adjusted posttest means of the two groups in coping styles was statistically significant.

Conclusions: The findings suggest that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is effective in enhancing adaptive coping styles.
