Introduction: A successful society depends on coherent and successful families and it comes true when the choice of couples is made on knowledge to fulfill intimacy. Establishing intimate relationships is hinged upon a variety of factors including the ability to recognize and regulate emotions. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of training of Enneagram typology on emotional self-regulation of couples in the premarital stage.
Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design and control group. The sample of this study was all couples in the premarital stage were referred to the counseling centers of Isfahan city, among them forty couples were selected by purposive sampling method based on entry and exit criteria and randomly divided into control and experimental groups. The data were collected by the cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire-CERQ. The experimental group received ten sessions of ninety-minute enneagram typology training once a week while the control group received none. After completing the interventions and after forty-five days, both groups responded to the posttest. Analysis of covariance was run to analyze the data.
Results: According to the results, the Enneagram personality types training was effective on emotional self- regulation of couples and there was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of emotional self-regulation criteria. [P<0.05]
Conclusions: This study shows that training Enneagram typology by providing insights on the different characteristics of the personality in couples leads them to perceive precise knowledge of the emotional states of themselves and their partner will be effective in preventing future problems in marital life to achieve a successful marriage.
