Introduction: The present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of group narrative therapy incorporating a blended learning approach on psychological well-being, resilience, and quality of life among abandoned children without parental care. These children may experience psychological difficulties and low levels of resilience due to the absence of parental care. Accordingly, this study examined whether narrative therapy could improve their psychological well-being and enhance their resilience.
Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The study population comprised all abandoned children without parental care residing in welfare centers in Amol County during 2023. Twenty children were selected through purposive sampling and randomly assigned to two groups of ten participants each. The instruments included Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire(1980); the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale(2003); and the Quality of Life Questionnaire developed by Varni and colleague(2003). Face and content validity were confirmed by experts, and the internal consistency of the instruments was established using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of zero point eight two, zero point nine three, and zero point eight eight, respectively. The data were analyzed using independent-samples t-tests, analysis of variance, and multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA).
Results: The findings indicated that group narrative therapy significantly improved psychological well-being, resilience, and quality of life among abandoned children without parental care. The largest effect size was observed for psychological well-being, at zero point nine three, followed by quality of life, at zero point eight five, and resilience, at zero point five four.
Conclusions: Group narrative therapy may help improve the psychological well-being and quality of life of abandoned children without parental care by providing a safe environment for expressing feelings and experiences, strengthening coping skills, and enhancing self-esteem. It may also support these children in developing new meanings from their experiences and improving their psychosocial functioning.
